Just finished watching this film that I had been eagerly waiting for, and I definitely needed some time to process it (yes, food pun intended). I remember when Switzerland started selling insect burgers in supermarkets to reduce the carbon footprint yet provide high protein food, I was quite uncomfortable. But I'm a happy non-vegetarian who has tried different kinds of meat. It's just that some living beings which are probably normal to eat in some locations aren't normal for me.
Sumon wants to break this notion, and his PhD topic of researching meat eating habits in North East India stems from his love for meat - varieties of it. He meets Nirmali who is an older married doctor because his friend had eaten too much meat and needed urgent treatment. Sumon's fetish for meat interests Nirmali, and they start spending time together to try different delicacies, so much so that it overpowers her normal appetite and results in a constant craving for meat. The buildup of the film is a sweet romantic one, despite the element of an illicit affair. But no it's not even that, because they never get physical with each other. Sumon is seeing googling "platonic love" in one scene. In order to mask the taboo of adultery, they start exploring other ways of intimacy that takes a very dark turn. The film escalates into unimaginable arenas that have probably never been explored in Indian cinema, and I wouldn't lie if I warn you that it can make you very uncomfortable.
However, in its core it remains a love story, not a very conventional one though, despite making your perspective fluctuate from time to time. There might be arguments about certain kinds of glorifications, but in my opinion I think the narrative remains very honest and doesn't sugarcoat anything. It is what it is, and you might end up feeling anything possible. Watch it for an unprecedented experience and also brilliant performances by the debutants. In the end it's upto you if it's palatable or not. As Nirmali says, "Meat is not the problem. Gluttony is."

അത്മാവിനെ അന്വേഷിച്ചു പോയാൽ മാംസത്തിലെത്തുന്ന ഒരു സിനിമയാണ് ആമിസ് എന്ന അസമീസ് പടം. ശക്തമായ തിരക്കഥ. പതിഞ്ഞ വേഗത്തിൽ ഉള്ള നറേറ്റിവ്. പക്ഷെ കഥാപാത്രങ്ങൾക്ക് എല്ലാം തന്നെ അന്യായ ഡെപ്ത്. മനുഷ്യൻ ഇരകളെ തേടി തുടങ്ങുമ്പോൾ മുതൽ അവനിലെ മൃഗവാസനകൾ ഉണരുന്നത് കാണിക്കുന്ന സിനിമകൾ പലതുണ്ട്. ഇപ്പോൾ ജെല്ലിക്കെട്ട് എന്ന സിനിമയുടെ തെളിഞ്ഞു നിൽക്കുന്ന ഫിലോസഫി തന്നെ അതാണ്. എന്നാൽ ആമിസ് ജെല്ലിക്കെട്ട് പോലെ അത് അത്ര വോക്കൽ ആക്കുന്നില്ല. മനുഷ്യൻ മനുഷ്യനെ ഇര പിടിച്ചു തുടങ്ങുമ്പോൾ.... എന്നയിടത്ത് പോയി അത് നിൽക്കുന്നു. അതിന്റെ ഭീകരത ആലോചിക്കാൻ പ്രേക്ഷകനെ വിടുന്നു.

'Tell me a movie that blew your mind, in recent times?'
A friend of mine had asked me this question recently, and despite some serious thinking, I couldn't come up with an answer. I knew the emotion he was referring: that excitement, with pure adrenaline gushing through your blood stream. You long for someone whom you can discuss the film with. And, I re-discovered this carnal joy, watching #BhaskarHazarika's #Aamis.
It's tough to define a film like Aamis. It is hard to say you liked it or not. It's a complex, but exciting experience that leaves an aftertaste; one you keep mulling over, just exclaiming 'what did I just see!'
Together with some incredible writing and staggeringly nuanced performances, Bhaskar sells an insane story of clandestine desires, taboos, abnormal love, and the ills of gluttony. But Bhaskar's strong tool in his arsenal is how he foreshadows his tale, slowly leaving us hints, easing us into the dark alley he wants us to take.
Aamis is the kind of film I missed watching. The ones that don't let you sleep as the mind just reels in the million things that film has left behind. Such films, whether you 'like it or not', spark of conversations with the self; ones that take you to unexplored places of your own psyche. And at the end of it, you know yourself a tad better. What more can a film give for its audience?

പെണ്ണെപ്പോളും ആണിനേക്കാൾ പ്രായം കുറഞ്ഞവളും, അവിവാഹിതയും ആണെങ്കിൽ മാത്രമാണ് അതൊരു പൊളിറ്റിക്കലി കറക്റ്റ് സിനിമയാവുക. എങ്കിലേ അത് ജനങ്ങൾ ഏറ്റെടുക്കൂ എന്ന മിഥ്യയെ നിഷ്പ്രയാസം ഇല്ലാതാക്കുന്നു എന്നത് തന്നെയാണ് ആമിസിന്റേയും വിജയം. സ്വന്തം മാംസങ്ങളിലൂടെ പുതിയ രുചികൾ കൈമാറുന്ന കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളായി ഒതുക്കേണ്ടവരല്ല ഇവർ.
മറിച്ച് സമൂഹത്തിലെ കെട്ടുപാടുകളിൽ നിന്നും മുന്നേ ഗമിച്ചവരെ വ്യതിചലിച്ച് പുതിയ കോമ്പിനേഷനുകൾ തീർത്ത മനുഷ്യരാണ്. .

ഇന്നലെ മുൻഗാമികൾ എന്താണോ ശരി എന്ന് പറഞ്ഞത് അതായിരിക്കണം എന്റെയും തീരുമാനമെന്ന ചിന്തകൾ മാറണം. എന്തിനെയും ചോദ്യം ചെയ്യാനുള്ള ധൈര്യം വരണം.
'നീ ഈ വഴിക്ക് നടക്കണം' എന്ന ആജ്ഞാപനത്തിനോട് പ്രതികരിക്കാനുള്ള ശേഷിയിലേക്കെത്തിച്ചേരണം. പ്രണയവും, ആത്മബന്ധവും, എഴുത്തുകളും എങ്ങനെ ആവണമെന്ന് എവിടെയും എഴുതിവെച്ചിട്ടൊന്നൂല്ല. ചെയ്തുപോരുന്ന , അല്ലെങ്കിൽ വിശ്വസിച്ചു വരുന്ന തെറ്റുകളെ ആവർത്തിക്കാതിരിക്കുക.സിനിമകൾ വെറും കാഴ്ചകൾ മാത്രമല്ല, സ്വഭാവരൂപീകരണത്തിനും, സാമൂഹ്യ വത്കരണത്തിനും നിലകൊള്ളുന്നവയാണ്. സ്റ്റീരിയോടൈപ്പുകളെ പൊട്ടിച്ചെറിഞ്ഞുകൊണ്ട് മണ്ണും, മനസ്സുമറിയുന്ന മനുഷ്യനാവണം.

Later there was a twist in the plot. The movie didn't have any limitation on expressing it's theme,so didn't you. Nirmali and Sumon were 'pure' and 'good at heart',but unseen by the naked eye of the third person. I would say the climax of the movie was the dawn of your eternal love, breaking taboos and embracing the new era of acceptance.

Later there was a twist in the plot. Her selfsame eyes narrated the tale of burning,ache,need, compulsion and weakness.She was your acute addiction.And there was only one way to disentangle it,to give 'all of you' to her and contrariwise.
I don't want to call your relationship just as a bond that seemed to grow for your mutual love for meat. In point of fact,I don't want to name it at all.Because it's something beyond description. A pure emotion travelled to the infinite ends for union. If she was your ruling passion,you were her silent yet powerful obsession.
The movie didn't have any limitation on expressing it's theme,so didn't you. Nirmali and Sumon were 'pure' and 'good at heart',but unseen by the naked eye of the third person. I would say the climax of the movie was the dawn of your eternal love, breaking taboos and embracing the new era of acceptance.

Aamis wasn't a movie for me, it was an experience. The closest parallel I can think of is Julia Ducournau's 'Raw', but that too in a totally different perspective. Bhaskar showcases one hell of a thought-provoking subject to the Indian cinema industry and can undoubtedly say shocking is the word we'll be looking for.
Aamis is a dark and refreshing tale of desire and an artistic achievement. Debutants @limadas77 and @ojaantrik_jajabor totally blown away my mind with their fantastic chemistry. The cinematography, music everything was awesome.

Not all the individuals who like movies will not be able to like this film as it is disturbing and you won't be able to watch it if your heart isn't strong enough. .

Aamis (Assamese) - Rightly as Anurag Kashyap said, Nothing like this has ever come out of India!

Remember the scene in Jallikattu where Kuttachan tells his assistant that the tastiest meat in the world is human flesh. What if someone else too had a similar thought? A movie that shows the relationship between a young PHD student and a middle-aged doctor whose husband is always out of town, this one could have easily been in the erotic mood but but the director literally had different ideas.
The plot from just an attraction at the start transforms into a whole different level. when the hero said I am gonna make her eat my flesh after dreaming of her, I thought it was going into that erotic mood but how far they go to feed their desire is so disturbing.
Lima das the lady with bluish eyes is the best part of this movie and her acting and her reactions gave so much depth. Agardeep Baruva also has given a brilliant performance and it's the performance of these two newcomers that gives the movie the much needed high.
And So after Rima Das who bowled me over with Village Rockstars and Bulbul can Sing, Bhaskar Hasarika is the next director whose work I look forward to in Assamese cinema.

Easily one of the boldest Indian films ever made: Arun Manoj
Some of the more fortunate regional film industries of the world have had at least one breakout movie which put their cinema on the map, by successfully captivating audiences across borders despite linguistic & cultural barriers. What makes the feat even more impressive is when the film in question is an independent production, i.e. one without bigshot distributors or marketing houses to back it up- the 2019 Assamese shocker "Aamis" is a perfect example of this. "Aamis" is one of those cult indies best experienced with minimal prior knowledge of the plot; which is why regardless of how badly I want y'all to check it out, the most I'll reveal is this: though the film starts off as just an intriguing platonic romance between a lady doctor in a neglected marriage & a young Anthropology scholar researching meat eating habits in North East India, from its stomach turning halfway point "Aamis" mutates into a feverishly original nightmare of psychological horror. Easily one of the boldest Indian films ever made, despite my personal opinion that the ending could have been stronger, "Aamis" is an absolute must watch. (8/10)

Unusually splendid: Cinema Appetite
AAMIS (2020,LIMA DAS, ARGHADEEP BARUAH)
As a matter of first important thing I can say about Aamis is, it is unusually splendid. The fundamental champ of the film is likely the topnotch writing. Both the story and the screenplay supplemented each other as they never appeared to be excessively extended or exhausting.
The story revolves around Nirmali, who is a pediatrician and Sumon, who is pursuing his PhD in anthropology. Nirmali is married to Dilip and they have a boy. As the story goes on Nirmali and Sumon fall in love while rejuvinating their love for meat.
Its disturbing , scary and love at its darkest Phase. Flawless Direction, Top Notch Performances By the actors.The BGM was also masterfully used to give those goosebump moments.
Take a look at this movie once for a wonderful experience.Aamis will affect and move you for sure.

एक प्रादेशिक भाषा में बनी फ़िल्म भी लीक से इतनी हटकर हो सकती है — इसकी उम्मीद भारतीय फ़िल्म जगत में कम ही होती है और ऐसा होना बहुत दुर्लभ भी है। असम के युवा लेखक-निर्देशक भास्कर हजारिका की फ़िल्म ‘आमिस’ सही मायनों में नेशनल फ़िल्म-डिस्कोर्स के पटल पर हर एक असमिये का सिर गर्व से ऊँचा कर देने जैसी है।

‘आमिस’ मूलतः असमिया भाषा का शब्द है जिसका अर्थ होता है: माँसाहारी. फ़िल्म का शीर्षक यही क्यों है — इसका फ़िल्म की कहानी से सीधा संबंध है। यह भेद फ़िल्म के दूसरे आधे हिस्से में प्रवेश करते ही खुल जाता है।

यह फ़िल्म खाने-पीने के शौकीन दो ऐसे लोगों की कहानी है, जो एक दूसरे से अपरिचित होने के बाद भी माँसाहार के मामले में मिलती-जुलती पसंद के कारण परस्पर खिंचे चले जाते हैं। निर्मली (लीमा दास अभिनीत) और सुमन (अर्घदीप बरुआ), दोनों को खाने में नए-नए प्रयोग करने की आदत है। दोनों को इस समानता का बोध होता है और वे मिलते-मिलते एक-दूसरे के प्रति लगाव महसूस करने लगते हैं।

निर्मली और सुमन का प्रेम भौतिकता के बंधनों से परे है। दोनों जब भी मिलते हैं तो एक-दूसरे को अनूठे माँसाहारी व्यंजनों का स्वाद चखाकर इस प्रेम को परिपूरित महसूस करते हैं। माँसाहार चखने की यह आदत फ़िल्म का अंत आते-आते ऐसा घिनौना रूप ले चुकी होती है, जिसकी हम कल्पना भी नहीं कर सकते।

फ़िल्म नवम्बर 2019 में आई थी। मुझे नहीं पता कितने लोगों ने देखी। पर हर-एक असमिये को, चाहे वो फ़िल्मों का शौकीन हो या न हो, यह फ़िल्म ज़रूर देखनी चाहिए और गर्व करना चाहिए कि इस स्तर की फ़िल्म एक क्षेत्रीय भाषा में बनी है। इससे पहले एक असमिया फ़िल्म की चर्चा शायद ही इतनी कभी हुई होगी।

बॉलीवुड डाइरेक्टर अनुराग कश्यप ने ख़ुद सोशल मीडिया पर आकर फ़िल्म को प्रमोट किया था और कहा था कि आमिस एक अनोखी फ़िल्म है। वाक़ई में आमिस की कहानी अनोखी है। लेखक-निर्देशक भास्कर हजारिका के इस साहसिक कदम की सराहना करनी चाहिए। फ़िल्म रुपहले पर्दे पर हिट है।

I have never watched something so dark yet so satisfyingly beautiful that the director and the actors brings out a feeling so real in the minds of the audience that the scenes got me chills. It's gracefully raw, pure and dark yet beautifully crafted. It takes you to a new dimension of cinema alltogether and is unexpectedly the most complete film I've ever watched. What else can anyone expect? You need to get etched to your chairs till the last second and that too with eagerness. It's something that was never expected out of Indian cinema and truly stands out of all films that have been released so far this year and a few before.

तमाम पारम्परिक नैरेटिव संरचनाओं में तोड़फोड़ करने वाली विस्मयकारी असमिया फ़िल्म 'आमिस': Mihir Pandey
"समीक्षाओं में आपने पढ़ा होगा कि 'आमिस' फ़िल्म भोजन के बारे में है। ग़लत पढ़ा है। दरअसल ये फ़िल्म भोजन के बारे में है ही नहीं। ये फ़िल्म अतृप्त इंसानी कामनाओं और उन पर लगाए जाने वाले बंधनों के बारे में है। भोजन यहाँ सिर्फ़ एक मैटाफ़र है और क्या कमाल का मैटाफ़र है। इसलिए भी क्योंकि बीते कुछ सालों में इसे हमारे मुल्क में जीने-मरने का, और मरने-मारने का प्रश्न बना दिया गया है। इसलिए भी, क्योंकि फिर भी यह इंसानी शरीर की सबसे मौलिक ज़रूरत है। मरने वाले की भी और मारने वाले की भी। ठीक वैसे ही जैसे प्रेम इंसानी शरीर की सबसे मौलिक ज़रूरत है।

नैतिकताएं सदा समाज सापेक्ष और समय सापेक्ष होती हैं, पर एक इंसान का दूसरे इंसान के प्रति निश्छल प्रेम समाज सापेक्ष नहीं होता। जब सामाजिक नैतिकता इंसानी स्वभाव को ‘सही’ और ‘गलत’ की कसौटी पर कसने लगती है तो यह खतरे की घंटी है। ‘आमिस’ का साफ़ कहना है कि इंसानी स्वभाव को उसकी निश्छल अभिव्यक्ति से रोकना जैसे किसी उबलते प्रेशर कुकर पर से सेफ़्टी वॉल्व हटा लेना है।"
